Super Rad Live in Concert Gig Poster

Super Rad! The Gig Poster

The Project

I was given a project to make a gig poster for the band Super Rad. The gig poster needed to capture a feeling, and show what the concert would feel like. As always the first step was to sketch.

I started sketching some ideas which included a dude chilling in a hot tub, a rocket ship, and some skateboard type ideas. I then sketched out this tetris idea (the one my thumb is over) and I liked the retro video game idea. I decided to stick with it.

Once I got the idea pinned down I started drafting. I liked the Tetris idea and started basing my draft off of a few of my sketches, this is what turned out.

I liked where it was going, so I asked some other designers what they thought. The response was that it was a cool design, but it is pretty straightforward it doesn't really capture a feeling or an idea for the band. I agreed and decided to pull the idea even farther out, and create an old gameboy design, so the above poster then turned to this.

This was the screen of the gameboy, and again I liked it, but I realized that I should make it even more unique. It's not like the band is sponsored by Tetris or something so I kept the gameboy idea but changed the game from Tetris to a start up screen.
Here were the critiques I received

Final Product

Here is the final product. It captures the vibe of the 80s. The thing that I like about the final product is how it evolved from the first idea to the final project. I thought the Tetris idea was really cool, but I realized it was not really capturing a feeling as much as it was just a funny idea. It was fun to look at the tetris idea, and start thinking of ways to make it more original, this project taught me a lot about the process of how to look at your original ideas in a different light. I also learned how it is important to not fall in love with an idea because if I was too invested in the idea of a tetris band poster, I never would have moved onto this band logo.

I also thought the concert promoter in the Gameboy font was a nice touch as well.

All in all this project really came together in the end. I think it captures the feeling of the 80s style rock band that is SUPER RAD.
